Christa Morris (who should know what she is talking about since she’s the two time Emmy Award winning producer of Venice The Series) breaks down the reason Supergirl is a hit show for The CW. SUPERGIRL AND RATINGS
by Christa Morris

I keep seeing people posting about Supergirl ratings in social media and although I understand everyone’s concern due to the move from CBS to the CW last year there were a lot more at play there then just ratings, but that’s old news.

New news….

Here is a rundown of the Supergirl rating for season 2. Over all she is the second highest rated show on the CW network, the Flash being the highest. People have to remember that the CW over all doesn’t have the coverage that CBS has, so they in no way can get the rating CBS does even on its worst day. The president of the CW has always said that if he could get half the viewership Supergirl had on CBS he would be happy…and she has done just that. She has always hovered around 2 to 3 million viewers. Over all she has had a pretty good season ratings wise and as long as she can keep this going she should be fine. But…Yes people need to watch the show, but all this slamming of her ratings is really not true.

Another thing everyone needs to take into consideration is her worldwide distribution. The fact that she plays in so many countries also makes her a valuable property for the CW and Greg Berlanti.

I am also guessing that unlike last year Supergirl’s early renewal will enable the producers to schedule out filming better in season three and do more during season PR with Melissa and the cast. Everyone seems to have forgotten that Supergirl didn’t get picked up for season two until the very last minute and they had to move all of production to Vancouver, meaning that they had to set up all new crew, sets, locations, etc. As well as scramble to get logistics, scheduling, scripts, etc done. They were always behind the eight ball this year and they did well to stay ahead of it. Moving to Vancouver doesn’t sound like a big deal but they could only take a few above the line crew with them and anyone they did take they had to pay Canada a fee to do so,which becomes a budgeting issue. Everyone else had to be hired from Canada.

That means that over 90 to 95% of their crew was new and never work on the show before, so everything learned while working on season one was out the window and had to be learned over by a new staff for season two…and although they might have wanted to take certain people with them those people might not have been able to go for one reason or another. It is a really big deal to follow a show to a new filming location. There are so many reasons why someone would or wouldn’t go it is impossible to name them all. So all in all Supergirl overcame a lot of obstetrical in season two behind the scenes. Things the average viewer would not have known or maybe even cared about. But I for one am very impressed with what they were able to do. In some ways they had to do season one over again.

Here’s a look at Supergirl’s overall ratings, what I see most of the time when people post about ratings online is 18-49 and although that is a main demo, there are actually lots of demo’s that Networks look at.
